Question: Are we spending too much time with our technology? The video here deals with the idea of "screen time" and whether teens are becoming overly dependent and focused on technology. The real issue isn't just teens though...it's all of us. As I mentioned in class, I have seen adults sit in restaurants together and spend a meal texting instead of having a conversation. In other examples, the QEII hospital in Grande Prairie had to block access to facebook a few years ago to prevent staff from spending working hours on social media, and I have seen many adults talking on the phone or even texting while driving. In other words, there are many of us who need to consider how we are using technology... In this blog posting, I want you to consider the above question, those below and the examples you see every day being set by adults. Also, make sure to vote on the poll => Do teens need restrictions placed on technology in order to live balanced lives? Do adults? What kinds of rules or restrictions can parents/families impose? | |

i think people are using technology today, cause people text all day use facebook on there phones and lots of other stuff all day. But i think we could cut down on using it if we just left are phones at home. or just turn it off at night and not keep it in your room.

Could you do it? I mean leave your phone at home and completely stay off technology for a day? What about a week...oooooh I sense a homeroom challenge coming on

I do think that people could do more to cut down on the time they spend on electronics daily. I think a lot of people go on electronics just for the sake of looking at a screen. If people could only use electronics for necessary things, screen time would be lowered for

I agree Stephen, as with many things, moderation is key. I also think that adults are a major part of the problem. For some reason, it seems to me that many adults believe that being an adult in itself means that basic social "etiquette" does not apply.

I do think we could cut down on the technology we use like turning off your phone when driving or leaving it at home and going for a walk. Its not like im saying to barley go on your phone just be responsible and use it at appropiate times.

I think we do need to cut back on the technology because usually as soon as we get home we either go on our phones, laptop, ect. But if we cut back on technology then we will be able to spend time with your family or go outside and do sports or something like that.

Balance, balance, balance. I do like playing on iTunes and youtube, and maybe it's because I am old, but I would still always choose to play a sport or get outside instead of sitting in front of any screen

We could cut back on technology but we really dont need too unless we are trying too save energy. Just picture how much more technology there is going too be in the future! We will be using technology every minute of the day

An interesting point about energy conservation Dakota. The maybe "scary" thing is that in your lifetime I would expect energy conservation to be the source of more and more very critical conversations. At the same time, you're right about technology changing. Honestly, I don't think I can even conceive of what technology might be capable of in twenty years. You better be ready for it...

i think that people could cut back on technology so we wouldnt get so attached to it. we use technology every part of the day and it would be better if we didnt use it as much

Yeah, I think people use technology WAY to often, we use technology every day, and I think our time could be better spent on other things.

I think in the winter people our age use technology way more because its cold and no one wants to go outside but in the summer i think how much we use technology goes down.

Cool point about the weather affecting our use of technology. This is very true in gp because even with winter sports, some days you'd have to be a complete idiot to go outside. I'd still rather snowboard or play hockey than sit in front of a screen.

I think that technology does take over some peoples lives, some people cant even fathom leaving their house without a piece of technology in their pocket. I cant even imagine what technology is going to be like in 20 years! I think if you use it in moderation it can be great.

I can't imagine either. I'm sure it is going to be so crazy I can't even wrap my head around it at this point. Dropping off the grid and leaving the house without my phone is so liberating...I love it. (Although I never leave without my ipod - gotta have my tunes).
